One of the greatest footballing story ever told happened yesterday at the finals of the African Cup of Nations when the underest of underdogs, Zambia, was able to beat tournament favorites and star studded, Cote D’Ivoire. This event comes 19 years after Zambia’s greatest tragedy when a plane carrying the entire squad and coaching staff crashed off the shore of Gibon killing everyone on board. Zambia would later pay its greatest tribute by lifting the coveted trophy in the same ground where their comrades have fallen 19 years prior. You can read in detail Zambia’s day of destiny here.
Above is a great scene at the end when Zambia’s coach, and part time Calvin Klein model, Herve Renard, carried the injured Joseph Musonda to celebrate with his teammates in the field. Musonda, 34, was in tears after he was forced to leave the pitch after only 10 minutes into the match in what could possibly be the biggest match in his career after severely twisting his knee in a successive defensive block.
